SLEDGEHAMMER 44 #2

(W) Mike Mignola (A) Jason Latour

Outgunned and outnumbered by an army of Nazis, a group of GIs must band together and unleash the Hyperborean power of the mysterious man in the iron suit in order to make it home safely.

sledgehammer.jpg

While I love Hellboy, BPRD and the Mignola-verse in general, I will be the first to admit that Mignola has fallen into a routine; a template for both art and story that becomes too formulaic for even the most die hard fan. Nazis, world war II, occult super science...been there done that. How to spice things up then? ROBOTS!! Robots punching those Nazi's to stop their weird occult experiments during the bloody days of WWII!!! C'mon, what more do you want?!! It's Atomic Robo done by Jason Latour by way of Will Eisner. Image the hard faced, exhausted and frightened soldiers of Eisner's war comics thrown into the dark alternate history of magic, science and PUNCHING!!! Nazi's in the face that is.

KNIGHTS OF SIDONIA TP VOL 01

(W/A) Tsutomu Nihei

One of the manga world's most intriguing artists returns with a science-fiction tour de force which combines post-apocalyptic action, modern sci-fi video game tropes, and a traditional Japanese aesthetic. In his follow-up from the hit Biomega series, Tsutomu Nihei tackles the world of hard science-fiction by creating a modern space comedy inspired by the genre's hits from his youth.

Former architect turned crazy bad ass manga-ka, Tsutomu Nihei crafts biotech worlds of cybernetic apocalypse filled with hook handed soviet bears, techplague corporate zombies and motorcycles that put Kaneda's to shame, all blanketed in a bleak greyness of the all to real near future. A true visionary, both of Nihei's previous works, Blame! and Biomega, stand as pinnacles of not only hardcore Sci-Fi, but cyberpunk, bio-punk and any other edgy adjective placed here-punk. We can only thank our good fortune that he had the insight to realize architecture was clearly not as important as making stupid funny books for less money. RECOMMENDED BY CASEY!!!!!!!
