JIM HENSON'S STORYTELLER: FAIRIES #1

(W/A/CA) Matt Smith

The critically acclaimed Jim Henson's The Storyteller celebrates four mythic tales of fairies inspired by folklore from around the world and told in the spirit of Jim Henson's beloved television series.
In this first issue, rising newcomer Matt Smith (Lake of Fire, Barbarian Lord) reimagines the "The Elf Queen and the Shepherd," a tale of elven fairies in Iceland.
When a Fairy Princess is cursed to the human realm and cursed to bring death with her, Grettir the Strong must discover the source of the trouble and break her curse.
Upcoming issues will include stories by Benjamin Schipper, Tyler Jenkins, and Celia Lowenthal.
Praise for Jim Henson's The Storyteller: Giants: "An enjoyable read, nicely adapting both the classic show and folk tale, with very solid artwork." - Multiversity Comics

GRAPHIC NOVEL SPOTLIGHT!!

Let's face it, the world of comic books or "Graphic Novels" as they are referred to currently, is overwhelmingly impenetrable for a lot of people these days. The sheer volume of new titles that ship each week make it hard to remember previously published books or even something that came out last Wednesday, but have no fear, Zanadu is here to help you discover what you didn't know you needed in your collection! We have thousands of titles available, but these are a few of our favorite forgotten gems kicking around the store.

THE FICTION TP

(W) Curt Pires (A/CA) David Rubin

//Published by Boom! Studios//
What's to Love: Written by Curt Pires (POP, Mayday) and illustrated by David Rubín (Battling Boy: The Rise of Aurora West), The Fiction is a fountain of fascinating ideas about a group of childhood friends who discover that the past will always come back to find you.

What It Is: Four childhood friends discover a box of strange books that, when read aloud, can transport them to the beautiful, imaginary worlds described within. But when one of them goes missing, the others vow never to reveal where they've been and what they've seen. Years later, when one of the remaining kids, now an adult, also mysteriously disappears, it's up to the last two of the group to dig up their dusty books to find him and finally figure out what happened to their friend all those years ago. Collects the complete mini-series.

And please don't ever hesitate to ask for recommendations or hazy recollections regarding books you might have missed while shopping at the store. Your friendly neighborhood comic monkeys are here to help! Remember, there is a comic for literally everyone on the planet--it's just a matter of unearthing it!

COADY AND THE CREEPIES #1

(W) Liz Prince (A) Amanda Kirk (CA) Kat Leyh

Punk isn't dead...but Coady is.
Coady, Criss, and Corey are sisters and bandmates in the band Coady and the Creepies. After a van accident leaves Corey badly scarred and Criss in a wheelchair, they're getting back into the punk scene.
But they still need to contend with the challenges of staying true to their punk ideals, while also dealing with the media attention they've attracted, as well as the tension surrounding the fact that Coady escaped the accident seemingly unscathed.
Now on tour, they're fighting their way through the (sometimes literal) battle of the bands, earning enamel pins, and heading for the gig of their lives...so long as no one realizes that Coady is actually a ghost

HEXED #1

(W) Michael Alan Nelson (A) Dan Mora

WHY WE LOVE IT: DAY MEN. 28 DAYS LATER. DINGO. Besides being one of our
favorite writers, Michael Alan Nelson is one of the industry's preeminent voices in horror,
and we couldn't be happier to be bringing back his fan-favorite creation HEXED for another dive into the depths of the Aether with an ongoing series!

WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Lucifer is the perfect mash-up of Buffy the Vampire Slayer and Lara Croft. Plus, HEXED was Pretty Deadly and Amazing SpiderMan superstar Emma Rios' introduction to the American comics scene back in 2008, and new series artist Dan Mora is poised to continue the trend with his lyrical, horrific, and wholly unique take on Lucifer.

WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Luci Jennifer Inacio Das Neves (most people just call her "Lucifer")
is a supernatural thief-for-hire, stealing wondrous objects from the dark denizens of the
netherworld for her mentor/mother figure, Val Brisendine. But when Lucifer accidentally
unleashes a terrible evil from one of the paintings hanging in Val's art gallery, will any of
the tricks up her sleeve be enough to stop it?

COMICS SHOULD SMELL GOOD!! EP. #91!!

ALL HAIL THE LORDS OF THE PRISON PIT!! AHEM, I mean, oh hey, guys, how ya'll doin? Sorry, we are a bit excited by the seriously awesome Prison Pit swag Anna smuggled back from SDCC, which was apparently quite the experience, but still lots of fun. This week sees the Remender juggernaut rolling forward with LOW, yet another new #1 as well as the return of Black Science! Vertigo drops two new books and marvel finally puts out Hawkeye after god knows how many months. ...and Prophet, well, kinda ends. SADNESS!! But it will return in the ashes of Earth War!!

COMICS SHOULD SMELL GOOD!! EP. #88!!

Gahh!! We are so so so very late this week!!! Our Video Monkey had to work at his job that actually pays him (amazing, I know) and wasn't able to do his hairy homo-sapien magic until the next day and then... casey dropped the ball. That's right, blame Casey (everyone does.) Anywayzzzz, the comics are still fresh and the excitement only ages like fine wine here at CSSG!!

COMICS SHOULD SMELL GOOD!! EP. #86

With Morgan deathly ill due to the another breakout of the dastardly legacy virus that attacked him late last year and Will stuck in the equally nefarious Seattle traffic of yesterday, Anna and Casey were forced to pick up the slack and take center stage in what we are calling "Do robots pee?" or 'We wish we were as cool as Morgan" This episode was a lot of fun to do and we think you'll be pleasantly surprised with this new iteration of the dynamic duo!!

BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA #1

(W) Eric Powell (A) Brian Churilla

WHY WE LOVE IT: BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA is one of our favorite cult-classic films because it mashed together '80s action and supernatural fantasy movies with '70s kung-fu flicks. This is the first time any new BIG TROUBLE stories have been told, and we have the film's original directer, John Carpenter, working with Eric Powell (THE GOON) on the story. You can't beat that!
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: Eric Powell is a huge fan of BIG TROUBLE IN LITTLE CHINA, so the sense of humor and over-the-top action he brings to THE GOON will be all over this book. Plus, Brian Churilla's (THE SIXTH GUN) art on this perfectly captures the outrageous world of BIG TROUBLE.
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Jack Burton, a macho, truck-driving adventurer, finds a stowaway hiding on his rig, "The Pork Chop Express", but that soon becomes the least of his troubles. He helped his best friend Wang save his fiancée from the clutches of a demon, but now the wedding has been invaded by more evil forces with one thing on their minds-revenge against Jack Burton!

One of the all time greatest things to ever be put on film returns in the form of a John Carpenter overseen, Eric Powell written comicbook with astounding art from Brian Churilla!! Picking up directly from the events of the movie, Jack Burton is once again drawn into a supernatural plot of deviously diabolical depths that threatens the happiness of his friend's lives once more!! I am beyond excited to see this universe continue (in any form) and with Eric Powell at the helm, you know it's gonna be goofy, violent, but above all--FUN!!

COMICS SHOULD SMELL GOOD!! EP. #82

In the aftermath of Video Monkey and Lady Video Monkey's disappearance, things almost fell apart here at CSSG until Anna came through with the brilliant idea to do a "VLOG" as Morgan informs us that is what the kids are calling it these days... So while there might not be any pictures, titles or editing to speak of, there is no less excitement for the fantastic funnybooks that are hitting the shelves this super nice Wednesday here in Seattle.

And a BIG thanks to our honorary Lady Video Monkey Anna for staying up and editing these things together!!

RUST HC VOL 03

(W/A) Royden Lepp

WHY WE LOVE IT: Creator Royden Lepp continues his allages
saga of Jet Jones and the
Taylor family in this third and penultimate installment of Rust, giving us the lyrical and visually
stunning ode to family, childhood, and sacrifice that we love.
WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: More secrets of the past are revealed for both Jet and the Taylors as
they face their darkest fears in this calm before the oncoming storm. And, of course, more
highoctane
robot action!
WHAT IT'S ABOUT: Oz Taylor may know Jet Jones' secret, but convincing the rest of his
family may be harder than he counted on. As Oz plots to rid the Taylor farm of the rocket boy,
Jet tries to prove himself to the family that has taken him in, in hopes of finding the home he has
searched for for so long. However, when shadows of Jet's past start coming back into his life,
he realizes his days of running may be numbered.

TRANSLUCID #1

(W) Claudio Sanchez (A) Daniel Bayliss

WHY WE LOVE IT: Claudio Sanchez and Chondra Echert have given us such BOOM! Studios favorites as KILL AUDIO, THE AMORY WARS and KEY OF Z. Their latest book takes the superhero trope of 'the never-ending battle' and turns it into something you've never seen before. WHY YOU'LL LOVE IT: TRANSLUCID is the superhero story you want but never thought you'd see. A story of childhood hope and loss as much as it is about the meaning of heroism, and what defines a hero and a villain. WHAT IT'S ABOUT: The Horse has been the archenemy of The Navigator for years. But The Horse feels The Navigator's moral compass has been slipping, and even a villain can't let that happen. The Horse decides to get a closer look into The Navigator's past that he's buried deep in his subconsciousness and find out what drives a person to make the right choice, and what propels someone to make the selfish one. Thus begins an exploration of why a young man would take the mantle of a superhero.
