HOMETOWN HEROES OF ZANADU! A SPOTLIGHT ON LOCAL COMIX!

Here at Zanadu, we believe that Independent comics are the backbone of the comic book industry. Since 1975, Zanadu has provided a stage upon which the burgeoning local talent can perform through our consignment program and today our local and indy section is larger than ever. In fact, it may very well be the largest local comix section in the city, but hey, who's counting? All we know is that comic creators need all the help they can get because let's face it, they spend countless hours toiling in the darkness to bring forth some soul tormenting story that dwells within them for absolutely zero money and usually little to no acclaim, but where would the industry be today if not for the tireless efforts of the visionary creators who braved the hellish onslaught of personal and professional struggle? So get in on the ground floor of the next big thing in comics or just sample the local flavor, there is always something unique to find on the racks of Zanadu.

This week we feature two books by local writer/artist/tattoo artist, Wil Spaedt!

and in cased you missed it--

PUNCH TO KILL #1

(W) Kevin Clarke, Wil Long, Marc Palm (A) Marc Palm

"What you have with Punch is a proven comics talent having a hell of a lot of fun with the form by playing in genre. If you think of Punch as a modern version of Scott McCloud’s superhero comics pastiche Destroy, you’ll likely be pretty close to the intent. Palm includes a list of influences for the book including the comics of Geoff Darrow, Simon Bisley’s Lobo comics, and films The Raid and Dredd. This isn’t some artsy-fartsy commentary on genre. This is an artist trying his hand at a form he genuinely enjoys.

In a short column at the back of the book, Clarke says that Punch began as a movie idea that eventually migrated to comics. It was a smart move. Palm’s artwork does what millions of dollars of computer generated effects cannot: he sells the ridiculous violence and supernatural elements of the story by giving them a physics of their own, an internal set of laws that work on the comics page. To call Punch a ballet of violence would be to insult both ballet and violence. What it is, really, is an onslaught of violence, an attempt to celebrate comics by trying to break comics. What it is, is art." - Paul Constant Seattle Review of Books & Seattle Weekly

NEW LOCAL COMIX!!!

I KNOW WHAT I AM TP

(W/A) Gina Siciliano

Against the backdrop of a repressive and violent 17th Century Rome, I Know What I Am tells the story of female painter Artemisia Gentileschi. In a world where the Catholic Church controls everything, this extraordinary woman challenges the society she was born into and becomes a groundbreaking artist.

Using solely ballpoint pens, Seattle artist Gina Siciliano creates a unique work that interprets Renaissance and Baroque style through an entirely new lens. Bridging the modern "low" art of comics with the traditionally "high" art of painting, Siciliano comments on our forgotten past, the ways we define progress, and the history of women in art as a whole.
