CAVE CARSON HAS A CYBERNETIC EYE #1

(W) Gerard Way, Jonathan Rivera (A/CA) Michael Avon Oeming

Cave Carson has done it all: survived countless adventures below the Earth's surface, met the love of his life, and gotten a cybernetic eye...somehow. After he and his wife, Eileen, sent their only daughter Chloe off to college, Cave was ready to become just another mundane member of the surface world. That is, until Eileen got sick. Newly widowed, Cave tries to piece his life back together when a knock on the door of his secret underground lab pulls him back into a past that he and Eileen thought they had left buried deep within the Earth.
Adding to his troubles, Cave must determine if his recent hallucinations and visions are the work of his mind or his mysterious cybernetic eye. (Spoiler: It's the eye.)
Written by Gerard Way (DOOM PATROL, Umbrella Academy) and Jon Rivera (Heartbreak), and illustrated by Michael Avon Oeming (Powers), this is an absurdist action-adventure story unlike any other!

LAST GANG IN TOWN #1

(W) Simon Oliver (A) Rufus Dayglo (CA) Rob Davis

Forget what you know of England, of the "Land of Hope and Glory." Instead, try damp and depressing, and embrace this miserable island for what it is. Our story kicks off in 1976: the country coming apart at its flared corduroy seams, a decade after the Great Train Robbery, when British crime has gone decidedly soft in the middle.
Time for a new generation of criminals to rise: a band of snotty-nosed heroes driven by destiny and cheap cider, who will strike fear back into the establishment, put art back into crime and crime back into art, and pull off what will become known as the heist of the century.
This new series from Simon Oliver (FBP: FEDERAL BUREAU OF PHYSICS) and Rufus Dayglo (Tank Girl), spans three decades, from the punk rock '70s to the decadent '80s and beyond, charting the rise, fall and redemption of a group of bandits that changed the face of the criminal underworld and closed the door on a legacy.

EFFIGY #1

(W) Tim Seeley (A) Marley Zarcone

After a sex-tape scandal, former Hollywood child star turned Z-lister Chondra Jackson returns to her hometown of Effigy Mound, IL, to find a seemingly impossible crime - a fresh corpse in an ancient Indian burial site. Even weirder, the murder resembles a scene from an episode of her old TV show, Star Cop, a live-action children's show about a kid detective.
As Chondra starts to investigate, she stumbles upon a bizarre cult that worships celebrities as eternal effigies. And these cult members aren't just worshiping - they're also ritually sacrificing anyone who defies their veneration of the beautiful and famous. Chondra's probe takes her on a terrifying tour of burial mounds across the world, from Stonehenge to the Nazca Lines of Peru. But what is the link between the cult, Chondra's hometown, and her own bloodline? Will Chondra become the hero detective she played as a child...or is she in fact the cult's unwitting messiah?
Written by rising star Tim Seeley (BATMAN ETERNAL, GRAYSON, Revival) and illustrated by Marley Zarcone (Black Circle, MADAME XANADU), EFFIGY is a twisted murder mystery and conspiracy tale that examines celebrity, godhood, and the price of fame.

VERTIGO QUARTERLY #1: CYAN

(W/A) Various

The four colors that are the basis of comics coloring serve as the jumping-off point for creators to push the boundaries of short graphic fiction in the new VERTIGO QUARTERLY: CMYK series. Starting with stunningly simple, bold covers, CMYK will defy all conventions of traditional comics anthologies. The unifying color could suggest a mood, a plot point, a coloring technique - limited only by the imagination of the fantastic creators we've lined up. And starting with CYAN, we have tales by some of the best talents in comics - a who's who of creative minds. Jock, Fabio Moon, James Tynion IV, Robert Rodi, Shaun Simon, Amy Chu, Joe Keatinge, Cris Peter, Tony Akins and more will take on the challenge of telling compelling stories that scream cool 'blue.' VERTIGO QUARTERLY: CMYK will continue through 2014 with MAGENTA in summer, YELLOW in fall and finally BLACK in winter. Be prepared to see color as only Vertigo can deliver!

When I look at a comic, the first aspect that hits me is the color. More so than the pencils, inks or writing, it is the color that translates the mood and true feel of the comic so that I may fully immerse myself in the world I am about to enter. So when I heard Vertigo was doing a series of anthologies based on color as a theme, my interest was immediately piqued and after seeing the massive amount of talent roped into this I am hopeful that this will be a return to form for Vertigo after what has seemed like a lackluster couple of years.
