RELAX
(W/A) Dina Kelberman
There’s no one doing comics quite like Kelberman, and this full-color, oversized mini is a sort of summing up of the issues her cartoon doppelganger grapples with in her The Regular Man minicomics series. The essential dilemma is that of relaxation/contentment vs stress/anxiousness. As always, her figures are deliberately crude but smash into elaborate and decorative lettering, unusual page and panel designs, and expressionistic swaths of color. What’s funny is that Kelberman’s fear of relaxation (“to be zombie?”) is what prevents her from coming close to it, though she is able to get hints of it throughout the comic. (From the review by comics journal)
THE REGULAR MAN
(W/A) Dina Kelberman
"People make art to experience the truth of life. Paradoxically, art is full of very unlife-like things - ghosts, knights, dragons and accomplishments. It is only in the work of Kelberman that we find the truthful beauty of what we experience. Here we find hope that doesn't so much radiate through the terrible ennui and boredom, rather it seems to radiate from it. A sage once told Kelberman, 'You're gonna fuck up,' and it seems that she was able to take that fuck-up and make it into the most insightful picture of the collective human soul. I didn't finish this book (I read most of it) but by God, I hope to one day!" - Connor Kizer, former roommate.
